"Porting UNIX to the 386" Article Series Grows
Restored series grows in size and readership

(May 5, 2006) LOS GATOS, CALIF. The 15th year release of the critical series that started open-source systems continues with the fourth article, Language Tools Cross Support. Thousands have read the articles, and many original 386BSD users have rejoined with William and Lynne Jolitz, creators of 386BSD - see the website http://porting-unix-to-the-386.jolix.com .

"Its been great hearing from so many of the early open source developers", said Lynne Jolitz. "They've reminded us of how critical 386BSD was to the growth of popular projects like Apache". Most open source projects in the early 90's were first operational on 386BSD, as it made them independent of commercial platforms.

The Porting Unix to the 386: Creating the Software Specification (January 1991) feature article in Dr. Dobbs Journal documented the scope and process of how to port BSD to the 386, and the Three Initial PC Utilities (February 1991) feature article provided simple DOS utilities to allow any new operating system to be bootstrapped from DOS - anyone could now follow in the footsteps. Another article, also in April 1991, covered Copyrights, Copylefts, and Competitive Advantage describing the rational between "free" and "open" software from that time.

"Over 2,000 386BSD users have touched base with us - it's been most gratifying to hear the storys.", said William Jolitz. "So far, we've head from almost everyplace in the world, even from diehard users who still keep working systems from Release 0.1 days."

A podcast interview with William and Lynne by Will Backman is also now available at bsd-talk.
